it is possible to do ldap authentication with a plugin (Wheaton) – a couple of plugins wp dir auth or wp mu ldap

mu is a lot less customizable (or more difficult to customize than non-mu) not all plugins work for mu. mu is good for developing themes.

options are to have one theme with lots of variables that are set in the admin panel – lots of coding – hard to predict - have to make modifications to the core php

Wesleyan solution is to have cascading, css. Each blog has 3 style sheets: the default theme, one of 5 customized types and one specific to the blog.
